Mary had a little lamb – on Australia Day

We’re rather partial to Aussies around here. The charming accents, the ability to “scull” until the wee hours and, of course, their self-deprecating sense of humor. Of which the following commercial is a wonderful example.

Now if someone could translate part or all of this spot, we’d dearly love to know what this gentleman is saying.

“Ad”ding on a Couple Pounds

It’s unclear how to parse the myriad emotions that spring at advertisers on first sight of these images–is it respect for the seemingly miraculous ability to reach Column A from Column B? Disgust by the encouragement of innocent beings to ingest this “food”? Scorn for the vastly inferior quality of creative work? It might not be anything as complex as anger, envy, or LOHAS disapproval…it might just be hunger, because those meals probably come with fries and a drink and is it lunch time yet?

DDB London’s Marmite Squeezy campaign took the Grand Prix at this year’s London International Awards, announced this week. Love the ads…but sorry, Brits…Marmite? Nasty, evil stuff that belongs nowhere near my toast. Nice tip from CR Blog.

Why are advertisers so scared of being self-deprecating?
It’s as if they think people wake up in the morning and say "Hey, Martha! The new (insert corporation here) ad is on! Come quick!"

News flash: People don’t do that. They hate ads, because most ads suck.
